Louisiana sales tax debt: what LDR can do and your options
Last updated · Reviewed for accuracy against IRS.gov guidance
Louisiana state sales tax is administered by the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR). Local sales taxes are collected separately by parish-level collectors, so a Louisiana seller often owes two or more agencies with different notices and procedures. Disputes with either can go to the Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals.

Who collects Louisiana sales tax
The Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) administers state sales and use tax. The state rate rose to 5% effective January 1, 2025. Local sales taxes are not collected by LDR — each parish has a local collector (or a parish-wide collection agency), with separate registration, returns and audits.
Two systems, two balances
Louisiana is one of the few states where local sales tax is administered almost entirely outside the state agency. A business behind on sales tax usually has a state balance with LDR and a parish balance with the local collector. Each negotiates its own payment arrangements. The Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers handles remote sellers' state and local tax through a single return.
Personal liability
Many states let the revenue agency assess owners and officers personally for sales tax a business collected but didn't remit. We haven't confirmed Louisiana's specific rule on an official LDR page, so we won't describe it here. If you were an owner, officer or bookkeeper with authority to pay bills, ask LDR directly whether a responsible-person assessment applies — and read the federal Trust Fund Recovery Penalty guide if payroll taxes are also behind.
Disputes and next steps
The Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals is an independent body that hears disputes over both state and local tax assessments; deadlines are on the notice.

How do I find my Louisiana parish sales tax collector?
+
The Louisiana Uniform Local Sales Tax Board publishes contact information for each parish's local collector. Your local notice will also name the collecting agency.
What is Louisiana's state sales tax rate?
+
5% effective January 1, 2025, plus parish and municipal taxes.
Who collects Louisiana local sales tax?
+
Parish-level local collectors, not LDR. Their balances are billed and resolved separately.
Where are Louisiana sales tax disputes heard?
+
The independent Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals hears both state and local tax disputes.
Does closing the business end Louisiana sales tax debt?
+
No. Closing stops new liability, but assessed tax, penalties and interest remain, and states often pursue the people responsible for collected-but-unremitted tax.
Where do I start if I'm behind on Louisiana sales tax?
+
File every missing return so LDR can replace any estimated bill with real figures, pay the current period, then contact LDR about the older balance.
